Mets Rumors: Team considering Chris Perez

Jason Miller

The veteran relief pitcher played for Cleveland for the past few years.

The Mets are considering free agent relief pitcher Chris Perez, says Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. The 28-year-old is right-handed and has been in the big leagues since he debuted with the Cardinals in 2008. He was traded to the Cleveland Indians in 2009 for Mark DeRosa and played there through the 2013 season.

For his career, Perez has a 3.41 ERA and 4.11 FIP. He's struck out batters at a clip of 8.7 per nine but has an undesirable walk rate at 3.8 per nine. With a 117 ERA+, a metric that's adjusted to park and league, perhaps Perez is a little better than his career numbers suggest.

Perez might be best known for getting busted earlier this year for having marijuana shipped to his house in his dog's name, though the repercussions for that arrest were minimal.

The Mets could probably use a veteran relief pitcher or two, and if Perez can be had at a reasonable price, he might make some sense for them.
