What was already a relatively weak 2014 free agent class for outfielders just got weaker.
Former Met farmhand Carlos Gomez has received an extension from Milwaukee that will keep him with the Brew Crew through 2016. And it's a very reasonable 3 year/$24m deal according to Adam McCalvy. Gomez joins Martin Prado as potential 2014 free agent OFers who've been extended before getting to taste the free market.
Gomez was the youngest outfielder set to hit FA in 2014 when he'll be 28. The Gomez deal means the Mets have to hope one or more of the in-house options breaks out or prepare to give up some real talent in a trade unless they want to take a risk on an oft-injured Jacoby Ellsbury (30 next opening day) or a lesser FA outfielder.
Barring a blockbuster that pulls in a vet it looks like it might be tough for the club to spend much of the freed up dough in the outfield.
Other free agent outfielders include:
Curtis Granderson (33 next opening day)
Coco Crisp (34)
Ben Francisco (32)
Austin Kearns (34)
Nate McLouth (32)
Mike Morse (32)
David Murphy (32)
Laynce Nix (33)
Ryan Raburn (33)
Nelson Cruz (33)
Chris Denorfia (33)
Jeff Francoeur (30)
Corey Hart (32)
Nyjer Morgan (33)
Hunter Pence (31)
Tony Gwynn Jr. (31)
Guys who will probably have options picked up unless they totally suck in 2013:
Chris Young (30) - $11MM club option with a $1.5MM buyout
Franklin Gutierrez (31) - $7.5MM club option with a $500K buyout
Jason Kubel (32) - $7.5MM club option with a $1MM buyout
