Make-The-Mets-O-Meter: Position Players, Week 3

USA TODAY Sports

Checking in on the position players trying to make the Mets' Opening Day roster.

After making a chunk of cuts a couple weeks ago, the Mets have gradually been reducing the ranks big league camp. Since last week, they've sent Wilmer Flores and Josh Satin to minor league camp, leaving plenty of other hitters in camp vying for spots on the Opening Day roster.

Player Comment
Mike Baxter, OF He's had a very quiet spring, and while it's tough to see him missing out on his roster spot, there are still plenty of other outfielders in major league camp.
Brian Bixler, UTIL He's having a hell of a spring, and his positional flexibility gives him at least a shot at the bench.
Andrew Brown, OF He's had about as much playing time as his outfield peers but hasn't hit enough to establish himself as a favorite to make the team.
Marlon Byrd, OF His spring slash line has come down to earth, but he's still apparently the primary right fielder heading into the season.
Collin Cowgill, OF Regardless of who's starting in the corners on Opening Day, Cowgill's platoon/bench spot looks like it's locked up.
Travis d'Arnaud, C Still in major league camp, d'Arnaud continues to look good but is still on track to begin the year in Las Vegas.
Matt den Dekker, OF His 14 strikeouts and 1 walk in spring games highlight his major weakness. I wouldn't bet on the Mets going defense-only — no matter how good the defense — in center field.
Lucas Duda, OF His bat has come alive over the past week of spring training games. He's still the most likely starter in left field on an everyday basis.
Brandon Hicks, IF Primarily a shortstop in the minors, the Mets may not want to slot him into a utility role.
Jamie Hoffman, OF Hoffman hasn't really seemed in the outfield mix from the get go.
Zach Lutz, 3B/1B It's an up arrow for now as David Wright and Justin Turner are injured, at least for a couple of days a piece. Lutz deserves a shot in the big leagues if Wright is hurt.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis, OF It's looking increasingly possible that Captain Kirk begins the year in Las Vegas, especially because he hasn't played since banging up his knee a couple weeks ago.
Landon Powell, C It's not inconceivable that Powell makes the team, but it's unlikely.
Omar Quintanilla, SS/2B A true backup shortstop and second baseman, Quintanilla's bat-glove combo would be a nice part of the Mets' bench, but he might be squeezed out by the roster crunch since he's not on the 40-man roster.
Anthony Recker, C Probably the favorite to back up John Buck behind the plate at this point.
Justin Turner, IF Although there appear to be better options for one of the backup infield gigs in Mets camp, Turner seems like as much of a lock as anyone to make the Opening Day roster.
Jordany Valdespin, 2B/OF More important than his spring training performance, which has been good, is the fact that Valdespin could slot in to second base if Murphy's not ready or an outfield spot if anyone out there is struggling.
