Not that it's breaking news, but the Mets have finally made it official: Johan Santana, Shaun Marcum, Frank Francisco, and Jenrry Mejia will begin the season on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 22.
It's a little surprising that Santana wasn't placed on the 60-day disabled list since he'll be undergoing season-ending surgery shortly, but the Mets figure to move him there as soon as they're in need of a spot on the 40-man roster. Players on the 60-day DL don't count against the 40-player limit on that roster.
Marcum is expected to make his first start of the season on Sunday as the Mets host the Marlins in their sixth game of the season. Francisco's timetable for return is a lot less certain, and elbow problems are always worrisome for a pitcher.
Mejia, though, wasn't likely to make the Mets' Opening Day roster and expects to begin throwing in about six weeks before heading to Las Vegas to try to re-establish himself as a future big league pitcher.
