Four relievers combined to allow eight runs over two innings, and the Mets ended their cold weather road trip with an 11-3 loss at the heavily insulated hands of the Rockies. The Mets were swept in the snow-shortened three-game series. Just pretend these games never happened.
Jon Niese pitched decently, and left the game down only 3-2 after six innings. But then the bullpen. Oh, the bullpen. Perhaps more offensively, besides simply assassinating the Mets' comeback chances, the relieving quartet of Josh Edgin, Scott Atchison, Jeurys Familia, and Jeremy Hefner turned an otherwise speedy game into a slog. Dinger, the Rockies dinosaur mascot, may be warm-blooded, but the Mets' relievers are decidedly not. If any baseball-disliking friends ask you why MLB doesn't schedule baseball games for the cold, show them any 20 minute segment from this Mets-Rockies series. Or don't, because if you do then they'll never like baseball.
