Final Score: Nationals 7, Mets 6 — Bryce Harper destroys two baseballs

Al Bello

Even with another good offensive performance, Mets get done in by three longballs, two from wunderkind/bro Bryce Harper.

Despite tagging Gio Gonzalez for five runs, the Mets' bullpen ensured the team would not get its second straight win over the Washington Nationals. Adam LaRoche erased a two-run deficit with a three-run homer to left-center off Aaron Laffey in the fifth, and after the Mets tied the game in the seventh, Bryce Harper hit Josh Edgin's first pitch of the eight inning onto the Shea Bridge, his second home run of the day, which ended up being the decisive blow in a 7-6 loss on a Saturday afternoon.

Jeremy Hefner was ineffective in his four innings. Hefner allowed four hits, three walks, and two home runs in four innings while recording only two strikeouts. Hefner was removed for pinch-hitter Ruben Tejada in the bottom of the fourth, who drew a key walk in the Mets' five-run fourth. It would be the only time all day the Mets had a lead.
