Mets Player Performance Meter: Pitchers, Week 6

Rich Schultz

The Mets' pitching staff has struggled mightily of late.

Five weeks ago, the Mets' pitching staff ranked third in baseball in ERA and fourth in FIP. That was, of course, at the end of the first week of the season, and it seemed a little too good to be true. Since then, they've come plummeting down to earth.

Now, the staff as a whole has a 4.45 ERA, which ranks 26th, and a 4.13 FIP, which ranks 22nd. The gap between ERA and FIP has been there all along, and given the team's lack of defensive prowess, it won't be a surprise if the it remains over the rest of the season.

This week's player meter covers the team's games between May 6 and May 12.

Player Last Week This Week Comment
Scott Atchison, RHP He's been overworked lately, as he pitched on a day that he was unavailable, but he wasn't all that good in 3 appearances, either.
Robert Carson. LHP The Mets haven't hesitated to give Carson opportunities at baseball's highest level, and he was actually pretty good this week.
Jeurys Familia, RHP He gave up a home run and a walk in his only appearance before hitting the disabled list with bieceps tendinitis.
Dillon Gee, RHP Having allowed 1 run in 5 innings in his start, Gee would have received the green arrow if he hadn't left the bases loaded with nobody out for Brandon Lyon in the sixth inning. He owes that guy a beer.
Matt Harvey, RHP Sure, he looked human yesterday, but he wasn't bad. And he damn near threw a perfect game in his first start of the week. Harvey the best.
LaTroy Hawkins, RHP With 5 K and 0 BB in 4 IP, Hawkins still gave up 6 hits and 2 runs.
Jeremy Hefner, RHP At least he pitched six innings.
Brandon Lyon, RHP He bailed out Gee and didn't do anything too awful in his only other appearance.
Shaun Marcum, RHP Terrible.
Jon Niese, LHP Really terrible.
Bobby Parnell, RHP Yes, he allowed an inherited runner to score the game-winning run yesterday, but he fared well over the course of the week.
Scott Rice, LHP With 2 K, 4 BB, and a 7.71 ERA, it wasn't Rice's finest week.
