In his last start, Jon Niese allowed eight runs, three walks, and two homers in four-plus innings against the Pirates. Adam Wainwright, comparatively, gave up a scant two hits and a walk in a shutout of the Rockies. You’re only as good as your most recent appearance, however, and this afternoon in St. Louis Niese got the best of Wainwright and the Mets toppled the Cardinals, 5–2, to avoid being swept.
Niese pitched into the eighth, keeping the Cards to two runs on six hits and a couple of walks. It was an encouraging start, as his last two outings were clunkers, poor performances perhaps exacerbated by a neck injury. In support of Niese, the Mets plated four runs against the usually parsimonious Wainwright. Daniel Murphy knocked in one and scored two, while David Wright inverted that result by scoring a run and driving in a pair—Murphy twice, to be specific.
