Final Score: Mets 5, Cardinals 2: Niese bounces back, bests Wainwright

USA TODAY Sports

Niese was good, the Mets scored some runs, and the good guys salvaged the last game of their series in St. Louis.

In his last start, Jon Niese allowed eight runs, three walks, and two homers in four-plus innings against the Pirates. Adam Wainwright, comparatively, gave up a scant two hits and a walk in a shutout of the Rockies. You’re only as good as your most recent appearance, however, and this afternoon in St. Louis Niese got the best of Wainwright and the Mets toppled the Cardinals, 5–2, to avoid being swept.

Niese pitched into the eighth, keeping the Cards to two runs on six hits and a couple of walks. It was an encouraging start, as his last two outings were clunkers, poor performances perhaps exacerbated by a neck injury. In support of Niese, the Mets plated four runs against the usually parsimonious Wainwright. Daniel Murphy knocked in one and scored two, while David Wright inverted that result by scoring a run and driving in a pair—Murphy twice, to be specific.

Brandon Lyon pitched a scoreless two-thirds of an inning and Bobby Parnell closed things out with a scoreless ninth, dropping his ERA to 1.04. The Mets improved to 15–23 overall and 6–11 on the road.

The Mets head to Chicago for a trio of day games beginning tomorrow at 2:20 PM when Matt Harvey opposes Edwin Jackson.
