Final Score: Mets 3, Cubs 2—Harvey pitches, Harvey hits, Mets win second game in a row

USA TODAY Sports

Matt Harvey was solid for seven-plus innings in Chicago, and he also batted in the winning run to lead New York to consecutive victories.

It's not a secret that the Mets have been depending on Matt Harvey to pitch well this season in order to win games. On Friday afternoon, the ace of the staff went the extra mile and knocked in a key run in addition to pitching a great game. Harvey struck out six batters and walked none in 7.1 innings. Oddly enough, every strikeout recorded by Harvey was the third out of an inning.

The Cubs scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Alfonso Soriano hit a slow roller to shortstop that was cleanly fielded by Ruben Tejada. It looked like the Mets would trade a run for an out on the play, but Ike Davis could not handle Tejada's low throw, and two runs scored instead.

The Mets scored their first two runs on solo home runs by David Wright in the first and Daniel Murphy in the fourth. The game was tied 2-2 from the fourth until the seventh, when Harvey came to the plate with Rick Ankiel on second base and two outs. As if he had not done enough already, Harvey ripped a single through the left side to give New York the lead.

Chicago threatened in the eighth when Darwin Barney hit a leadoff bloop single. Later in the inning, with Barney on second and one out, David DeJesus hit a line drive single to right field off of Mets reliever Scott Rice. Barney was waved around third base, but Marlon Byrd made a brilliant throw to nail Barney at the plate and preserve the one-run margin.
