Matt Harvey is the NL Pitcher of the Month

Marc Serota

The phenom's wonderful start to the season has resulted in him being named the best National League pitcher for the month of April.

The first month of Matt Harvey's sophomore campaign has gone about as well as any Mets fan could hope for. In six April starts, Harvey pitched to a ridiculous 1.56 ERA and 0.81 WHIP to go with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of over 4:1. While many fans went into this season hoping that Harvey could show that he has the stuff to be the future ace of the Mets' rotation, he's gone ahead and quickly become appointment viewing for baseball lovers across the country.

The Harvey hype peaked on April 19 when he out-dueled Stephen Strasburg and led the Mets to a 7-1 victory over the Nationals, but even in Harvey's more modest starts since then, he's been very good. In his two outings to close out the month, Harvey didn't make it past the sixth inning, but he still struck out 14 batters combined and walked just three. It doesn't look like he's about to fall off a cliff anytime soon.

No matter how long the Mets are able to stay in the pennant race this season, Harvey will remain a player to watch. If he can keep up the promising pace he's set for himself, the Mets will have in hand one big piece of the puzzle that they've been trying to put together since Omar Minaya left town.
