Final Score: Phillies 8, Mets 7 — Why can't we be Frandsen?

Mike Stobe

It was like deja vu: Ryan Howard hit two home runs off Dillon Gee today. The Mets did make a nice comeback, but it wasn't enough to make up for Gee's gopheritis—or Kevin Frandsen's heroics.

For the majority of the game, it seemed as though the Philadelphia Phillies would win by a wide margin.

Dillon Gee, who had hurled a 1.53 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 8.00 K/BB over his past four starts, didn't look nearly as dominant today against the Phillies. The right-hander only lasted five innings, surrendering eight hits and six earned runs while walking none and striking out four.

Needless to say, the long ball plagued Gee today. He allowed two home runs to Ryan Howard (who hit his fifth and then sixth career home runs off Gee) and one to Michael Young (who now has three career home runs vs. Gee). Howard also smacked a two-run single in the first inning. Almost worth that $20 million contract this year, right?

The Mets' offense was pretty silent until the seventh inning, when the team collectively put on their rally caps. After starter Jonathan Pettibone, who held the Mets to just one earned run over six innings, left the game due to a tight back, the Mets took advantage. With John Buck (reached on an error) and Kirk Niuwenhuis (walked) on, Omar Quintanilla hit an RBI single to start the chain gang. Reliever Michael Stutes then walked Josh Satin (obligatory #HAILSATIN) before exiting without recording an out.

But the Mets weren't done. Recent Mets acquisition Eric Young Jr. continued his amazin' play by hitting a two-run double off reliever Justin De Fratus. Jordany Valdespin, whose fielder's choice in the third inning resulted in the Mets' first run, also hit into another run-scoring fielder's choice in the seventh. The Mets would score four runs the seventh inning.

In the ninth inning, Jordany Valdespin proceeded to hit the "Pap" out of the ball, per Gary Cohen. David Wright then reached base on an error by Michael Young, and hustled home to tie the game on a Daniel Murphy single.

Yet, the Mets would still fall to the Philies, 8-7, after pinch-hitter Kevin Frandsen slugged a walk-off home run off Mets reliever Carlos Torres. So, so close, you guys.

Full recap to follow.
