Mets Morning News: A great comeback turns into another stinkin' loss

USA TODAY Sports

Your Sunday morning dose of New York Mets and Major League Baseball news, notes, and links.

Meet the Mets

Dillon Gee got rocked by the Phillies, putting the Mets deep into a 7-1 hole, but they made a valiant comeback, scoring four runs in the seventh and two in the ninth off of Jonathan Papelbon to tie things up. Unfortunately, Carlos Torres served up a solo home run to Kevin Frandsen on the second pitch of the bottom of the ninth and the Mets ended up losing 8-7. Great comeback but David Wright says that there are no moral victories in baseball. I think I remember Tom Hanks saying that.

HAPPY HARVEY DAY! The Mets look to take 2 of 3 from Philly, as they send their ace Matt Harvey to the mound against former Nationals lefty Jon Lannan.

In injury news, Lucas Duda was placed on the disabled list with an intercostal injury. The team promoted Zach Lutz from Las Vegas in his place. In better news, Tim Byrdak made his first rehab appearance with the GCL Mets.

The reversed call from Friday evening's game has Terry Collins favoring more instant replay.

Zack Wheeler and Chipper Jones have become allies. Yuck. Could Wheeler end up being better than Matt Harvey? That would be awesome.

Highly touted pitching prospect Noah Syndergaard was promoted to Binghamton and he'll start tonight. Gavin Cecchini is following in the footsteps of his brother Garin who plays in the Red Sox organization.

Over at Meter Avenue, Rob has our mid-July prospect performance meter.

Our GIF of the game yesterday was one of my favorite moments from Friday night's game: David Wright sliding hard right into Chase Utley's junk. Give that man the $10,000! It works on so many levels!

Daniel Convery has our Daily Farm Report from Saturday.

On June 22nd in Mets history, Brock Mahan looks back to when Tom Seaver called it a career.

Around the NL East

Dan Haren was awful again, as the Rockies torched the Nationals 7-1. The highlight of the game was probably Nats' reliever Ross Ohlendorf's old-timey windup.

The Marlins lost to the Giants 2-1 in 11 innings.

Milwaukee pitching shut out the Braves again, as the Brewers beat Atlanta 2-0.

The Phillies placed Mike Adams on the DL yesterday. Signing relievers to big money contracts is very smart!

Around the Majors

Reds' announcer Marty Brennaman said something silly about Joey Votto.

In looking at platoon splits out of the bullpen, Scott Rice is among the best in the league in lefty versus lefty matchups.

Former top catching prospect Devin Mesoraco has been buried by the Reds, though to be fair, he hasn't hit much in the majors.

Angel Pagan has a small tear in his hamstring tendon and is weighing surgery.

Former Mets reliever Frankie Rodriguez notched his 300th career save.
