Mets selected Dominic Smith 11th overall of the player draft. But before we begin, who is Dominic Smith?
Dominic Smith is a 1B out of Serra High School, Los Angeles. He can also play a little outfield, but will be a 1B. He hits hits for average and power. He is considered above average contact and power. Smith doesn't have the smoothest hands around, but gets the job done. His swing on the other hand is very smooth and has raw power when he hits the ball right. He is committed to USC so we might not see him for a few years.
What does this pick mean?
Smith is pretty much just a first baseman. What does this say about and to Ike. Maybe they are trying to light a fire under
Davis may use Smith as potential trade bait in a few years. Now you say why would they do that with a first round pick? Well Smith is a steal in the first round because of how 1B's slip in the draft. Now if it helps Ike perform better, then maybe a team like the White Sox or the Rockies will trade a decent outfielder for him. Or maybe if Davis doesn't step up it's "see you later Ike." But if Ike performs, but they don't have faith, trade him for an outfielder.
All in All
Many fans, including myself questioned this pick, but it might be a good pick. His power and contact is above average. His swing is smooth almost Cano or Griffey Jr. like. If meets his expectations or just misses them he will be a slightly above average offensive first baseman and slightly under average defensive first baseman. Maybe he isn't here to stay or maybe he is Ike's ticket out of Flushing.
