Mets Morning News: Wheeler struggles, Lyon implodes, Nationals take weekend series

New York Mets-related news and links for July 1, 2013.

It got ugly early yesterday for Zack Wheeler and the Mets, as the Nationals scored four runs in the second inning en route to a 13-2 victory. Wheeler gave up five total runs in 4.2 innings of work, striking out five, walking two, and surrendering two home runs. It wasn't a good performance, but it was also just his third big-league start, so no reason to freak out or anything. Go get'em next time, Zack! Brandon Lyon gave up six runs in an awful relief outing and reserve catcher Anthony Recker pitched the ninth inning, allowing a two-run home run to Ian Desmond.

This is shaping up to be one big offseason. Sandy Alderson, don't let us down.
