Carlos Torres looks to get the Mets a series split with the Nationals this afternoon at 1:35 PM. He'll match up with righty Taylor Jordan.

How does Matt Harvey's first calendar year in the majors rank historically? Pretty well, though it sounds like that doesn't make continued sustained success a slam dunk. It sounds like Harvey has 10 more starts to go this season.

Carson Cistulli wrote up a brief review of Jenrry Mejia's season debut, complete with some outstanding animated GIFs.

Marlon Byrd's 2013 has been incredible, especially in contrast with his career prior to this season. The outfielder understands skepticism about whether he's clean but says he's unafraid to answer questions about it.

Cody Derespina looked at the Mets' recent resurgence, reviewing some of the components that have made the team more competitive of late.

The Mets got good news on the injury front, as Jon Niese made his first rehab start in the GCL. He tossed two innings and gave up a few runs but it's just good to see him throwing. It also sounds like Jeurys Familia may pitch again later this season. Finally, Travis d'Arnaud and Lucas Duda both played full games again yesterday.

Around the NL East

Likely still on loan from Tabasco of the Mexican League, former Mets lefty Raul Valdes got the spot start for the Phillies yesterday in place of Cliff Lee and got torched by the Tigers in a 10-0 defeat.

The Marlins rallied late but fell short, as the Pirates won 7-4.

Julio Teheran was great as the Braves' righty shut down the Cardinals high-powered offense en route to a 2-0 victory. Tim Hudson had surgery yesterday and can resume baseball activities in four months.

Around the Majors

Derek Jeter plans to return to the Yankees' lineup today after he completed a simulated game. Meanwhile, Brian Cashman was against the Alfonso Soriano trade, which was orchestrated by the team's ownership. Certainly not the first time that's happened and likely not the last, either.

Apparently, Hall of Fame weekend is "kind of sad" this year according to Bob Gibson. Hmm, maybe that's because the writers decided not to vote anybody in. Can't wait for more of the same next year!

Thanks to a sports programming bubble, the Dodgers may be the last team to strike gold with their local tv deal.

David Ortiz went ballistic on a dugout phone, smashing it to pieces with a bat after a bad strike call against him.

Rangers' reliever Tanner Scheppers was assaulted on a downtown Cleveland street while getting food Thursday night, just two blocks from the team's hotel.
