Final Score: Dodgers 5, Mets 4 — Mets Swept Out of La La Land in Extras

"Gimme a sec; before I slid into third, I forgot I don't have a ridiculous goatee cushion anymore." - Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Spor

The Mets turn a salvaged win into a walkoff loss as LaTroy Hawkins gave up a game-tying pinch hit homer to Andre Ethier, and Adrian Gonzalez delivered a walkoff RBI in the 12th.

In attempting to salvage a win on the Left Coast, the Mets hoped that scoring early but not often would prove to be enough. They drew first blood on an Andrew Brown RBI double in the top of the second, then stretched their lead with a three-run homer by Marlon Byrd in the third that looked like it might prove the difference.

Dillon Gee tried to play the stopper as he dispatched the Dodgers quickly and quietly in the early going. Trouble nearly found him in the fourth, when he allowed four singles but no runs, thanks in large part to a successful pickofff of Carl Crawford. This troublesome inning immediately followed Gee banging a triple off the left field wall and banging his head on the infield as he slid into third. So let's not do that again, Dillon, please?

Then in the sixth, Gee faltered again by loading the bases with one out and ceding an RBI groundout and single to cut the Mets' lead in half. He stopped the bleeding there, however, and two excellent innings from Scott Rice set up a save opportunity for LaTroy Hawkins. For the first time since kinda sorta taking over closer duties from Bobby Parnell, he was not up to the task, as Andre Ethier belted a game-tying two run homer.

The game slogged into extras until the 12th, when Yasiel Puig hit a hustle double, then came around to score on an Adrian Gonzalez single.
