Meet the Mets
The big news on Tuesday was that the Mets dealt Marlon Byrd and John Buck to the Pirates for second base prospect Dilson Herrera and a player to be named later. There was plenty written about the deal, from Toby Hyde to John Sickels to Baseball America. In the Wall Street Journal, Jared Diamond says that maybe Sandy knew what he was doing at the July 31st trade deadline. Adam Rubin passed along some post trade tidbits. In order to fill the spots on the roster, the Mets promoted Matt den Dekker, Rob Carson, and Anthony Recker. Den Dekker will split time with Juan Lagares in center field.
Matt Harvey's injury is still a big deal around the internet. Ted Berg writes that Harvey got hurt because pitchers get hurt. Shocker. Ben Lindbergh of Baseball Prospectus and Jeff Zimmerman of FanGraphs both looked into indicators of potential injury. Will Carroll has a summary of everything you need to know about Harvey's injury and recovery. In the end, there was nothing the Mets could do, so we should probably all calm down about it. Remember, Harvey could easily come back and still be a stud. Of course, you know it's a sad situation when the abhorrent Phillies are feeling bad. Harvey had this to say about his elbow:
Thank you everyone for the kind words and support. I may be done this year, but I will be back next year for April 1.— Matt Harvey (@MattHarvey33) August 27, 2013
Terry Collins doesn't have a contract for next year and Sandy Alderson says that he will not be solely evaluated on wins and losses.
This slipped through the cracks but the Mets announced five players that they'll send to the Arizona Fall League.
Toby Hyde has a fantastic piece on the development of Brandon Nimmo this season, complete with quotes from his manager and people in the organization. To close out the first round pick segment of Morning News, Gavin Cecchini continues to polish his game in Brooklyn.
