A Little Draft Pick Cushion

A protected first round pick would be sweet. Budget willing, it’d give Sandy more flexibility to pursue pretty much any free agent upgrade. Options are good ergo a protected pick is good.

Still, like many here I can’t bring myself to actually root against our beloved Metsies.

At the same time I find myself checking the "upside down standings" after every game. And it’s likely to come down to the wire, particularly if the Mets pick up their current disappointing recent pace.

But the Mets do have a bit of cushion. Not if we go on a big winning streak, but if we muddle to the finish line there’s a chance we sneak into the "Bottom Ten" via tie-breaker. According to Wikipedia:

The general draft order is the reverse order of the previous year's standings. If two teams finish with identical records, the previous year's standings of the two teams is the tiebreaker, with the team having a worse record receiving the higher pick.

Here’s what the current reverse standings for teams under .500 look like going into the Wheeler start against Washington.

The clubs in ital all finished with better records in 2012 than the Mets did. So if we finished in a tie with any of them we get the lower draft slot – essentially we’re a half game further "behind" those clubs than the standings suggest.

Currently, eight clubs are within two of the Mets 79 losses so a tie is entirely possible. Three of those clubs would win a tie-breaker with us while five of those clubs had worse records than the Mets in 2012 and thus would lose the tie-breaker.

So if we’re tied for 10th/11th with the Padres, Phils, Giants, Mariners or Brewers – our pick is protected. If we’re tied for 10th/11th with the Blue Jays, Rockies or Twins, we get bumped.

Same principle applies if we’re tied for 6th/7th with any of those clubs. For five of them we’d get the 6th pick, the other three we’d slide to 7th.

Let’s go Mets – but let’s also go Brewers, M’s, Giants – I’ll let you decide what you want the Phils to do.
