Mets Morning News: Mets head to Cleveland to face Scott Kazmir

Leon Halip

It was a pretty slow news day on Thursday.

The Mets had Thursday off, ahead of the series opener in Cleveland today. Mets fans will get to see Scott Kazmir take the hill against his former organization, the first time Kazmir has done so since being TRAIDed for Victor Zambrano. Zack Wheeler will pitch for the Mets. Kazmir was one of a handful of options that could have helped the Mets in 2007 and 2008, another being current Met Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Terry Collins had some comments about the need to add more power to the Mets lineup. To that end, Lucas Duda talked about the opportunity to get some time at first base.

Anthony DiComo at MLB.com profiled Gary, Keith, and Ron. In the article, he writes "Thanks to one enterprising fan blog, [GKR] have their own dorm-room-style drinking game."

Episode 33 of Amazin' Avenue Audio is on the front page, and if you have the time, you should really give it a listen.

Worried about what you missed on SNY this week? Worry no more, because James has you covered.

The 51s and B-Mets both lost yesterday, and are both on the brink of elimination. The Sand Gnats had the night off.

Around Baseball

The Reds managed to defeat the Cardinals, leaving themselves just three games behind Pittsburgh and six and a half in front of the Nationals and Diamondbacks for the final wild card place.

The Royals managed a walk-off win to help keep their wild-card chase manageable, winning in 13 innings. It looks as if the playoff hunt in the AL is going to be an awful lot more fun to watch than the race in the NL this year. The current leaders for the final wild card spot are the Rays, who didn't manage to beat the Angels last night.

The A's 3-2 loss to the woeful Astros means they're currently occupying a wild card place. They sit half a game out of first in the NL West.

BtB should be a regular read for everyone that enjoys baseball, and their piece about pitch selection yesterday needed to be placed this morning.

FanGraphs had an interesting read on slap hitters advancing through the minors, with a former Met being the first player they looked at.
