Mets to add Eric Campbell to roster

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The 27-year-old has been in the Mets' minor league system since 2008.

The Mets announced last night that Eric Campbell would join the team today. Drafted by the team in the eighth round of the 2008 amateur draft, Campbell debuted in 2008 with the Brooklyn Cyclones and gradually climbed the minor league ranks over the last seven seasons.

In thirty-three games with the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s this year, Campbell hit .355/.442/.525 with three home runs. For a little perspective, his .433 wOBA there ranks fifteenth among Pacific Coast League hitters with at least 50 plate appearances this year. Several other 51s are high on that list: Andrew Brown, Taylor Teagarden, Allan Dykstra, and Zach Lutz.

Campbell has played first, second, third, shortstop, and both corner outfield positions for Vegas this year. With the Mets, he'll likely be limited to the four corner positions. The team hasn't announced a corresponding move yet, but the expectation is that Campbell will replace Josh Satin on the roster. Campbell is a right-handed hitter, and he's feasted upon left-handed pitching in the minors, which should give him a shot to play when Lucas Duda sits against left-handed starting pitchers.

The addition of Campbell is the second roster move the Mets have made in the past few days in an attempt to help a flailing lineup, as Wilmer Flores joined the team on Friday night to get a look at shortstop just to get his bat in the lineup.
