Although Mets pitchers limited the Diamondbacks to three runs, the team lost this afternoon. Zack Wheeler allowed all three of those runs between the second and third innings of the game, and the Mets scored just twice to lose the series opener.
Despite the rocky start, Wheeler went on to finish six-and-two-thirds innings without giving up another run. He struck out seven and walked one in the start, though he also hit a couple of opposing hitters with pitches. Still, it was an encouraging recovery. But the Mets, who had plenty of opportunities, scored a run in the third on a Curtis Granderson ground-rule double and another on a solo home run from David Wright in the fifth. They had several other opportunities to score in the game, but they did not. The team is now 21-26 on the season.
