Cruz would not have cost the Mets 8-mill. the Mets would have gotten into a bidding war with Baltimore. this bidding war could have been as little as $8-10 Mill or escalated exponentially no one really knows. the Mets offer to Cruz may not have been accepted even if it was more money. this is a make good 1 year deal to secure a multi year deal next season. Cruz has hit 19-HR in a hitters park but there is no Data that i have seen that adjusts HR in that park to this one. maybe i'm wrong and all of those HR would have gone out here Cruz is a big strong guy. maybe Cruz would have rather played here in a pitchers park to show that he can hit it out anywhere. i am not mad that Sandy did not sign Cruz because there is no way of knowing if he could have.
what i take offense with Sandy's strategy is the signing of Chris Young was done so early in the off-season. the talking heads in the Media kept saying all off-season that Sandy needs to make a move he needs sign someone anyone. he has show the fans that the Mets have money. they did this not for the good of the team they did it to rile up fans and sell news papers or increase ratings. it seems to me atleast that Sandy capitulated. the move to sign Young so early looked desperate to me. it looked like a move to quell the Masses and the Media. there were not many suitors going after Chris Young so there was no justification for signing him so early in the off-season.
it's not so much that the Mets signed Chris Young and he is under preforming that irks me. or even that the money was way to extravagant for a player coming off such a down year. it is the timetable of when he was signed. Sandy could have held out and been in a better position to see where the market was at the end. i sincerely hope he does not make that mistake again. especially since the next move that he makes will likely involve trading some good young pitching for a bat. i don't care what the media or dumb loud fans say. if Sandy makes a deal to make a deal and does not get the best possible player back i am going to be livid. and so will those same loud fans who are screaming to make a move right now when the move does not work out. i may not be happy with Tejada, Flores and C.Young. but i much rather yell at them all year then have another Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano fiasco. and yell about it atleast a decade later but probably forever.
