Forget Tulo, Save Your Prospects for Stanton

The buzz around the Mets currently is that they have reached out to the Colorado Rockies and asked them to consider the Mets if and when the Rockies decide to trade Carlos Gonzalez and/or Troy Tulowitzki. I gotta admit, it's courageous of the Mets to even call the Rockies. It gives the public the impression that they're serious and want to upgrade.

Right off the bat, forget CarGo. Don't get me wrong, Carlos Gonzalez is a very skilled hitter, but he is a product of Coors Field more than any player in recent memory. CarGo is currently hitting .175 with 6 home runs (played more games away than at home) and only 14 RBIs. This doesn't bode well especially if you were to bring him into the spacious Citi Field. His home/road splits have always scared teams, but this season they are a night and day difference. Then factor in that CarGo would cost you top prospects and it's almost a no-brainer to move on.

Now, Tulo is the harder player to resist. The guy has been a superstar from nearly the moment he came to the majors, and all he does is crush baseballs. The guy also has a winning mentality which makes him very attractive for a young team, but considering that news has broken about Colorado being interested in Syndergaard, Matz, Herrera, and Nimmo, it has to make you wonder how much it would cost for Tulo (nevermind his contract.) I'm the type of person who believes no matter how good of a player a person is, if they're frequently hurt, they aren't worth it. Now, make the argument that David Wright is hurt often, but David isn't costing us top prospects, and he's the captain of our team so he gets a free pass from time to time. But Tulo is injury prone, going to be 30, and would cost AT LEAST 2 of those names that I mentioned earlier. In my opinion, if you're going to deal these prospects, it better be for Stanton.

Giancarlo Stanton is the type of player that I would give my first born child for. He is the player that the Mets DESPERATELY need. He's young, hungry to win, and he hits baseballs that haven't landed yet. However, the plan to acquire Stanton would start this season for me. It would need to begin with this year's trade deadline.

It's no secret that the Giants are in desperate need of pitching and a 2B, and it just so happens that the Mets are shopping both positions. My proposal would be to trade Bartolo Colon and Daniel Murphy to the Giants for Kyle Crick, their top pitching prospect, and another prospect, hopefully Mac Williamson. Now, many of you might be saying "We don't need any more pitching!" While I tend to agree, trading for Stanton will no doubt cost you Syndergaard right off the bat, and gaining Kyle Crick would greatly help in reducing the loss of Thor. For those of you who aren't familiar with Mac Williamson, he's an OF prospect for the Giants who hit 25 HRs last year in single A. He would've started this season in AA, maybe even got a shot at the majors, if he hadn't had to undergo Tommy John surgery. Also, let me state this, I love Murph. I love everything that he's about and I think he's a great team player, but losing him wouldn't kill our team. He's not a player that carries a team, and his trade value might never be higher. If we could get Crick for Murphy and Colon, I'd be absolutely ecstatic.

Now comes the tricky part. How do we acquire Stanton? I won't lie, it'll definitely cost a lot. I'm talking Syndergaard, Nimmo, Plawecki, and maybe another couple of lower prospects. Even that might not be enough, but the Mets have the farm system to pry Stanton away from the Marlins, and it's no secret that Stanton isn't happy in Miami. Stanton would probably require a $200 million 10 year extension, but he's the type of player that I wouldn't hesitate to do that with. I would try to make that part of the deal if I were Sandy. The type of deal that we did with Johan when we traded for him.

If acquired, Stanton IMMEDIATELY makes the Mets a contender. The roster would look something like this.
Rotation: Harvey, Wheeler, Niese, Gee, deGrom, with Crick, Matz and possibly Montero waiting in the wings.
Bullpen: Torres and Hefner as long men, Edgin, Black, Familia, Mejia, plus a couple others throughout the season.
Lineup: Granderson LF, Herrera 2B, Wright 3B, Stanton RF, Duda 1B, d'Arnaud C, Flores SS, Lagares CF and Tejada, EYJ, and Campbell on the bench. Williamson would start in AA and possibly be ready for the majors in 2016, if not sooner.

I don't know about you guys, but that sounds like a winning team to me. As always, let's go Mets.
