I was going to present this blurb in the comments section, but I wanted to include a brief poll and a place for debate.
So many folks hate the new QO system with Boras and now Drew probably leading the charge.
Here's my solution: take the same annual value within the current QO guidelines (not entirely sure how the QO AV changes from year to year), but make it a 3-year offer. So if the current QO offer is 1 year/15 million, then the new offer would need to be for 3 years/45 million.
This type of QO seems like it would still compensate teams for losing legitimate stars / really solid players and would not affect the top tier players' ability to market themselves. Guys like Cano, Ellsbury, etc. would still receive QO's, would still select free agency, and would still receive substantial contracts from other teams.
The mid-tier guys like Morales, Cruz, Drew, etc. would most likely not receive a 3-year QO and would be able to market themselves freely without the QO hanging over their heads. And if they DID receive a 3-year QO, they most likely would accept it, which would seem to be a deterrent for teams looking to make offers to guys they don't really want.
That's my two pennies. But hey - what do y'all think?
And apologies if anyone else here has already brought up a similar idea.
