In the wake of Garrett Richards's gruesome injury covering first base, the Angels seem like a potential fit for a Bartolo Colon trade. The injury to the ace of the Angels’ staff leaves their management in a tricky situation.
In order for Colon to be traded to the Angels he would have to clear waivers and avoid being claimed by any of the twenty-eight teams ahead of the Angels, who have the best record in baseball. And last night, Ken Rosenthal reported that the Mets had not yet placed Colon on waivers.
Colon has pitched fairly well this year with a 3.85 ERA and 3.40 FIP in 161.1 innings of work. He would be a boost to the ailing Angels pitching staff, which already lost Tyler Skaggs to Tommy John surgery earlier this month. But the Angels don’t have a very strong farm system, and the Mets would presumably want something of value for Colon. Sandy Alderson recently stated he’d be willing to wait until this offseason to trade the veteran.
The Mets might have been waiting for a moment like this to dangle their quality pitcher in exchange for some prospect, which they did last season with Marlon Byrd. Will Alderson be able to pull off another August trade?
