Left-handed relief pitcher Jack Leathersich has been optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room for second baseman Dilson Herrera on the 25-man roster.
Leathersich pitched in just two games during his call-up, combining for one inning with two hits (including a single to Justin Bour in his debut) allowed and one strikeout.
Taken in the fifth round of the 2011 draft, Leathersich is a strikeout pitcher but struggled with his command in the minors. In Triple-A this year, he's pitched in seven games with a 2.57 ERA, allowing two earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out 13. His strikeout-to-walk ratio sits at 6.50 this year which is likely unsustainable but is still a good sign for a pitcher looking to regain control.
Frank Viola, the Las Vegas team's pitching coach, called Leathersich "a lesser man's Sid Fernandez" early in spring training this year.
