Fox Sports MLB insider Ken Rosenthal has some thoughts on how the Mets could improve their current situation at shortstop. He believes the Mets could vastly improve their infield defense by eventually promoting Matt Reynolds from Triple-A to take over at shortstop, while Wilmer Flores would move over to second base.
Standing in the way of a Flores move to second base is the incumbent, free agent-to-be Daniel Murphy. Rosenthal could see the Mets dealing Murphy for a prospect or a reliever, but the trade market for Murphy hasn't developed at this time. He also doesn't see any move as imminent since the Mets would prefer to break in Reynolds alongside a healthy David Wright at third base. Wright continues to rehab from a hamstring strain and lower back soreness that have kept him out of action for a month. Rosenthal also mentions Dilson Herrera as a potential Murphy replacement, but the 21-year-old is currently on the DL with a broken middle finger.
Flores has struggled at shortstop with nine errors this season and his lack of range has cost the Mets dearly on more than a few double play chances. However, his bat and youth make him a good chip for the Mets to build around. He currently leads the Mets with six home runs, following last night's grand slam in a 14-1 win over the Brewers.
