The Miami Marlins, who were shut out—and nearly no-hit—today by the Braves, have fired manager Mike Redmond. With the loss today, the team is 16-22 on the season, though they were favored by many to be competitive this year. Those predictions weren't without flaws, of course, just like the Marlins' roster, but a manager getting fired for an under-performing team isn't a new thing.
Redmond was originally hired by Miami following the 2012 season to replace Ozzie Guillen. Before that, he was a manger in the Blue Jays' minor league system. As a player, Redmond made his major league debut in 1998 for the Marlins and spent seven seasons there before playing five for the Twins and one for the Indians and retired after the 2010 season.
The Marlins will introduce a new manager tomorrow morning at 11:00 AM EDT. When rumors popped up about Redmond potentially getting fired earlier in the season, Mets Triple-A manager Wally Backman was mentioned as a potential replacement for him, though there were conflicting reports about the level of Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria's interest in Backman.
