The Mets announced that catcher Johnny Monell is being called up to the major leagues from Triple-A Las Vegas. It is expected that he will be activated for tomorrow's game. The 29-year-old was signed by the Mets in the offseason to a minor league contract. He hit well during spring training, but the Mets elected to stick with Anthony Recker as Travis d'Arnaud's backup, and Monell was instead dispatched to Las Vegas to back up Kevin Plawecki. He was off to an extremely good start over his first month with the 51s, hitting .397/.455/.638 with four home runs. He led the Pacific Coast League in batting average.
The Mets will have to remove someone from the active roster to make room for Monell, but the team has not yet announced who it will be. Potential candidates include either of the catchers on the current roster. In that case, Anthony Recker would likely be chosen. Or Kirk Nieuwenhuis could be designated for assignment due to his poor start to the season. Monell would then take his place as the left-handed bat off the bench.
