Last Tuesday, the Braves' Matt Wisler and Arodys Vizcaino combined to throw a one-hitter against the Mets. For this week's Mind Boggler, we're asking you to name every pitcher to one-hit the Mets in a complete-game effort. (Wisler's and Vizcaino's effort therefore would not count.)
Pitchers to throw a one-hitter against the Mets.
This is admittedly one of the tougher Mind Bogglers we've posted, so here are a few hints: There are two Hall of Famers on the list, plus one borderline Hall of Fame candidate of recent vintage. Each of the last three pitchers listed were fairly prominent starters for division rivals, so Mets fans should be familiar with them.
One of the interesting—although unsurprising—aspects of these one-hitters is how bunched together they were. If you count both complete-game and combined one-hitters, the Mets were one-hit an incredible ten times from 1964 to 1968, and another nine times from 1990 to 1994. Those stretches, of course, coincided with some of the darker periods of franchise history.
You'll have six minutes for this quiz. Good luck, and remember to post your time and score in the comments!
