Steven Matz gave Mets fans a real charge today, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning in the Mets 5-1 victory over the Padres at Citi Field today. The team, which has struggled mightily as of late, won back to back games for the first time since July 3-4.
Wilmer Flores got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a solo home run off of Padres starter Clayton Richard. Neil Walker made the game 2-0 with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. The Mets tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth, in a move that is very unlike these Mets.
Matz was, as you may have guessed, excellent today, striking out 8 and walking two before giving up a base hit to Alexei Ramirez with one out in the eighth. Addison Reed finished the inning, and Gabriel Ynoa, though giving up a run, finished the game for the Mets.
