With yesterday’s acquisition of Jay Bruce and reacquisition of Jon Niese, the Mets are doing some roster shuffling. Since the trades occurred mid-day on Monday, the Mets weren’t pressed to clear spots on the 25-man roster until today.
To make room for Bruce and Niese, the Mets have placed Asdrubal Cabrera (retroactive to August 1) and Justin Ruggiano on the 15-day disabled list.
The Mets have also recalled Ty Kelly and Josh Edgin from Triple-A Las Vegas. Brandon Nimmo and Seth Lugo have been optioned back to the 51s. Edgin’s next appearance will be his first in the big leagues since he underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2015. The lefty has 31 strikeouts and 17 walks in 28.2 innings with Las Vegas this season.
Kelly, meanwhile, is returning for his third stint with the big club this season. In limited playing time he has just four hits in 29 plate appearances. He’ll offer some defensive versatility and probably not much else.
Bruce, who had worn uniform #32 with the Reds, will switch to #19 with the Mets; Steven Matz has a stranglehold on #32 already. Niese, who wore #18 with the Pirates, will return to the #49 he previously wore with the Mets.
