The first inning started off well for the Mets and then it was all downhill from there as they lost to the Yankees 9-5.
Curtis Granderson led off the game with a home run against starter Chad Green. The Mets then loaded the bases with nobody out but managed to score just one more run that inning.
Wilmer Flores got the start at short over Matt Reynolds because Terry Collins was offensively focused today. Unfortunately for everyone involved that strategy backfired in a big way. Flores struck out twice and grounded into two double plays, the first coming in the first inning to end that rally. His struggles in the field were again apparent when he had misplays in both the seventh and the eighth innings.
Michael Conforto lost any flashes of promise he showed last night when he had two brutal at-bats in key situations tonight. He struck out twice with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.
Newcomer and NL RBI leader Jay Bruce made his mark when he too struck out with the bases loaded in the seventh.
Mark Teixeira was in the middle of everything for the Yankees tonight. He fell down at first when he got confused by a ground ball hit by Kelly Johnson. Johnson eventually scored the tying run in the second. However, Teixeira made up for that in a big way when he hit a three run home run off Steven Matz in the bottom of the second to essentially put the game away.
He also caused a bit of a kerfuffle when Matz hit him in his next at-bat, and he got into it with Hansel Robles in the seventh.
Erik Goeddell was the best pitcher for the Mets tonight after Steven Matz, Hansel Robles, and Josh Edgin all had poor outings. Oof.
