Despite a strong bounce-back performance from Steven Matz that saw the lefty outduel Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke, the Mets fell to Arizona 5-3 on Tuesday night.
After allowing six earned runs to the Yankees in his last start, Matz struck out nine in six innings, surrendering two earned, five hits, and one walk. Though he exited the game down 2-1, New York took the lead on a 3-2 home run from Neil Walker after Curtis Granderson led the bottom of the sixth off with a double. The dinger was part of a three-hit night for the Mets second baseman that saw him score the game's opening run in the first on a James Loney ground out.
The lead didn't last long. Righty Hansel Robles came on in relief the following inning and imploded—laboring through 32 pitches for two outs, three hits, two walks, and three earned runs. The capper was a two-run triple from Michael Bourn
New York proceeded to get shut down by Arizona's bullpen. Three pitchers held the Mets to one hit, no runs, and three strikeouts in the final three frames.
