The Mets lost to the Marlins today, 4-2, on a walk off pinch-hit home run by J.T. Riddle. Where to begin with this one? Matt Harvey pitched well through six innings, giving up two runs and scattering seven hits. The real story, however, was the no-hitter Marlins pitchers took into the eighth inning. Even after Neil Walker singled to break it up, Mets hitters couldn’t muster an attack, and it appeared they would lose the game 2-0.
Then the ninth inning happened. The Mets, down to their last out, tied the game on an Asdrubal Cabrera single and sent it to the bottom of the ninth. Marcell Ozuna led off with a single and nearly scored the winning run on a Miguel Rojas double; but he was gunned down at the plate on a perfectly executed relay throw from Cabrera.
It was a great play, and it seemed that the game was destined for extra innings and even an eventual Mets win. The good vibes ended in short order, however, when Riddle sent the ball flying over the wall.
Though the Mets made it a game, it was a frustrating conclusion to a frustrating four-game series. The Mets have a much-needed day off tomorrow, and then resume play on Tuesday against the Phillies in New York. One hopes the brief respite will help the team reboot.
