Kennedy Intrigued by Mets, Favor Not Returned

The New York media machine is already in mid-offseason form, and Mark Hale of the Post gets the ball rolling with his column this morning, Kennedy Intrigued by Mets. pj mentioned this article in another thread:

Kennedy, one of the elite options among free-agent second basemen this winter, has spent the last seven seasons with the Angels. He filed for free agency on Sunday, however, and yesterday his agent, Paul Cohen, said he has "definite interest" in the Mets.

This past year Kennedy hit .273 with four homers, 55 RBIs, 16 steals and a .334 on-base percentage for the Angels. Kennedy, who turns 31 in January, has fared well in the playoffs (he was the ALCS MVP in 2002 and has hit .308 in 25 career postseason games) and although he committed nine errors this year (tied for seventh among AL second basemen), he had the fewest among regular AL second basemen in 2005 (five).

emphasis (bold) is mine

Calling Kennedy an "elite" anything is laughable. Kennedy will turn 31 in January and is a .280/.332/.398 career hitter and has a 72% stolen base success rate (48/171) as a big-leaguer. Defensively, Kennedy ranked 11th in the 2006 Scouting Report, By the Fans, For the Fans. It's hard to imagine that he would be a better option than Ray Durham or a Jose Valentin/Rich Aurilia platoon.

Kennedy is a slappy singles hitter with little power and below-average plate discipline. He doesn't strike out a lot (72 in 139 games in 2006). He's kind of a speedy Paul Lo Duca at second base, and you can make the argument that the Mets could have used another one of those during the postseason this year. Kennedy made $3.4 million this year and it's not clear if he is looking for a pay raise (probability: good).

His agent says he has "definite interest" in the Mets, though I suspect you'll hear some variant of that line from the representatives of every free agent this offseason.

UPDATE [2:00pm]: Rev Halofan, my SBNation compadre over at Halos Heaven, was kind enough to provide us with an idea of what the lucky team that signs Kennedy will wind up with:

Adam Kennedy has an uppercut swing that will break the heart of any by-the-book scout or toolsy purist. He doesn't drive the ball so much as bitch-slap it down the line or (infrequently) toward the gap. His few homeruns are sweet-spot contact, i.e., pure luck on grooved pitches. He has devolved into a singles hitter, although one who will go First-to-Third for you and is particularly good at the hard slide into 2nd base to break up a double play. If he bats .300 again in a full season I?d be shocked, but I wouldn?t expect him to drop down below .260 ? he is that sort of twilight gamer who soothes the fans? hope by producing just enough that you?d swear he was consistent. Few fans give up on him. They love his grit and he doesn?t put asses in seats as much as keep them there when the season starts to untether from expectations.

He used to put together a hot month at two points in the season batting nearly .400 for most of each, while being a cool Mendoza-like plate presence the rest of the season. The last two years he seems to have five or six hot weeks broken up by the arctic-like results. He is unselfish when it comes to the productive out, the bunt, the batters box mind-game to get the defense to reveal its tendencies. In the clubhouse, he has become quite the red-ass and will fearlessly get in the face of any player who does not toe the team line.

His defense has lost a step but he is above league average in range and great on the throw, the soft toss, the reflexive turn-and-tag, the muscle memory Nureyev one-eighty that doesn?t make a web-gem because it occurs at midnight eastern but 40,000 fans on the west coast give it a standing ovation. If your pitching staff has a lot of pitch-to-contact types who induce groundballs to Double-Play out the hits, Adam Kennedy is far more valuable to your team.

There you have it.

Not an upgrade over what we have.
And doesn't every agent tell the press that the Mets, Yankees or both are interested in order to drum up interest and more $ from other teams?

thanks for the upgrade, Eric
this is the first hot stove rumor that i'd like to stomp all over.

I thought about the PLD comparison before I posted my link, but I don't think it is appropriate. PLD hits for better average, provides better defense and has those "intangibles". Maybe it is because he is on an AL team on the left coast, but you don't hear much about Kennedy's contributions to "team chemistry". He did get an MVP in the playoffs, but he's not even a poorman's Speizio (with or without the fuschia flava sava).

Pedro offers you his protection.

aurilia
is an intriguing option. I've seen him play a few games at Great American. He still has good pop and he comes out to "No sleep til Brooklyn". Speaking of Reds, I'd love to see the Mets sign Javier Valentin.

why?
because the team needs another aging catcher who's merely adequate with the bat?  He'd be another Castro for the bench, nothing more than a better alternative to Kelly Stinett.  Anyway, it appears from Valentin's Rotoworld page that he's signed for '07 and has a team option for '08.

just say no
to Adam Kennedy.  For all the reasons you and your colleague give, and additionally for the Ecksteinian overpayment he's about to demand.  (I've been enjoying Fire Joe Morgan's eck-stended eck-stasies of Eckstein excesses in the media so much that it's put me into full-on Eckstein overdrive, and from now on I will always refer to undertalented and overpaid players as Ecksteins.  Kennedy is an Eckstein, to be sure.)

Speaking of overpayment, I saw a headline on Rotoworld, from the Washington Post, that made me laugh.  "Soriano to seek Beltran-type contract."  Call me back when you're a complete, well-rounded player with a consistently high OBP who fields well at a key position, and we'll talk.  Power-and-strikeout hitter who can't play any position well?  Not so much.

Sori
I saw that, too, and have only momentarily taken a break from laughing maniacally to scribble this comment. Too, Beltran was about to play his age 28 season when he signed with the Mets; Soriano is 31. This report would be even funnier if I didn't think Soriano and his agent were serious.

Sori
That must be some good weed down that Soriano and his agent are smoking. Not only is Soriano older than Beltran, he is terrible at 2 defensive positions, while Beltran is a Gold Glove caliber CF, a premium position. He also has charecter issues(attitude, hustle), while Beltran may be one of the top charecter guys in the whole league. Keep this guy away from the Mets.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

No doubt
and Beltran actually had a better resume with the bat, despite being younger - Beltran had two seasons of over .900 OPS ('03 and '04), while Soriano is older and last season was his only > .900 OPS (.911).

I do think Soriano is athletic enough that he will be an adequate left fielder, perhaps even better (not to go scoutsy, but he just didn't have the mentality of a middle infielder, he was relying on raw athletic ability and never seemed concerned about getting better) and I think this talk by he and his agent is really just an attempt to end up at Vlad (if acquired as an OF) or Tejada (if acquired as a 2B) money - $70-$75 million over 5 or 6 years, which will be fine for the team that signs him so long as he continues to produce.  I'm sure, whether the Mets and Yankees are interested or not, his agent will pretend that they are.

Kennedy would be okay if they wait him out and sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal at a reasonable cost.  He kind of sucks at the plate, but won't kill the Mets so long as he is batting 8th, and is still quite good in the field.  Then again, the Mets have other options.  Two words, A-Hern: Batting Practice!

Kennedy
Is OK if we're getting him as a fall back late and very cheap. But he doesn't do anything Stache couldn't do next year or even a healthy Woody if given enough abs.

upsetting rumor of the day:
The Cubs are interested in Aaron Heilman as a starter.  Honestly, I'm not opposed to dealing Heilman if the right trade comes along, but that trade should bring back a good young starting corner outfielder, or a starting pitcher better than Heilman if it's a small-market team's salary dump.  Heilman is a very valuable commodity: young, still cheap, with proven success in the major leagues and a chance to get a lot better -- so he should be bringing a serious return.  I don't see a deal like this working out with the Cubs, though perhaps that's because I'm a little hazy on what young players they could offer.  But no way should Heilman be dealt just because the other team has more faith in his ability to start than the Mets do.

Murton
After looking over the Cubs' major-league roster, the obvious fit to me would be Matt Murton, a 24-year-old corner outfielder with quite decent numbers.  I think Murton for Heilman straight up would help both teams, and I'd absolutely do it if I were Omar Minaya and my scouts agreed.  But I don't know if the Cubs have soured enough on Murton to be considering dealing him.  Anyone follow the Cubs closely enough to know?
