FanShot Chats
Sabermetrics! Fantasy League is live.
Yahoo! opened their fantasy baseball season and I have renewed the league. I don't like using AA for league purposes so this will be the last FanShot about it until it's time to virtually hand out our magnificent trophy. I have sent out invite emails to last year's managers via Yahoo! so look in your inboxes. Returning managers get priority but if some decline or don't respond (Gina are you out there?) there will be available spots for those AA'ers who are interested. While I have your attention (hopefully), I have made some tweaks to last years set up. The scoring is the same but I have added a RP slot and a IF slot in an effort to counteract the SP-dominance. I am open to suggestion with regard to that IF slot. When re-uping for the league, please be sure to check the boxes for receiving league notices and message board updates. This is pretty crucial. Also, be sure to bookmark and join the Sabermetrics! League blog. This is also very important because that is where we will be deciding draft time and other important things (there are already two polls open there).
Banner Day is Announced!
I just got an e-mail from the Mets that they were bringing back Banner Day! It is scheduled for Sunday, May 27, 2012 at 1:10 pm against the San Diego Padres.
Juan Pierre and Jon Garland.
Now that prices are falling and in an effort to replace speed and hitting at the top of the lineup why not sign Pierre. After seeing Jeff Francis take a minor league deal can Sandy get a Garland deal done?

Back of the Envelope Payroll Calculation
Santana + Bay + Wright + Dickey + Carrasco = $63.325 million. Add in Francisco ($6 million), Rauch ($3.5 million), Torres ($3 million after arbitration?), and Ramirez ($2.5 million after arbitration?) + 18 major league minimums (18*$480,000) = $86,965,000, or $87 million. Am I missing anything?
AA2OP: How to Enjoy the Next Two Years
This won't merit enough words to be a FanPost, but I do want to generate some discussion. The Reyes ordeal has shown just how brutally bleak the Mets' financial outlook truly is. Until the Bay and Santana contracts are off the books and David Wright is dealt with one way or another, the Mets have zero financial flexibility and therefore no chance to compete in 2012 or 2013. Let's assume for the purposes of this discussion that the Bay/Santana contracts are untradeable. I want to bring in players who are fun, players I can rally around that are either former Mets, past their prime, what have you. Since we can't win, we should still be able to have some fun. What players do you want the Mets to bring in that would make the team, in Sandy's words, "fun to watch?" Endy Chavez is my first thought...any others come to mind?
CBA Question
Ok, call me crazy, but we are Mets fans, so I'm not going to throw this out of the realm of possibility... say the Fish somehow find a way to sign Pujols (or another type A rated higher than Reyes) What does that mean as far as our compensation for Reyes? Gracias, as always.

Is Reyes to Marlins worse than Strawberry to Dodgers in 1990?
Reyes may certainly go on to do great things in his career. Though he may also get injured and become a shell of the former player never reaching his potential. Time will tell. ----- Well, that's pretty much what happened with Strawberry. Straw was 29 years old in 1990. He had over 250 or so home runs. He was on pace to have a shot at the 500, 600 or 700 HR club (yes, before steriods were in vogue; or as they were becoming popular). But as much as Straw's departure hurt, it was somewhat lessend going forward by his complete burn out. He left the Mets in 1990 with great potential to smash records and finished, albeit somewhat stingingly with the Yankees, with only 335 HRs. A career with so much promise in 1990, virtually crashed and burned. ------ Sure, Reyes decision hurts now. But as the lesson from Straw shows, its really what they do from here that determines how bad it really was. We shall see.
So here we are...
We've all spent months preparing for the inevitable: Jose Reyes leaving. Personally, I thought it would be easier than this to let him go but I can't seem to wrap my mind around how he will, in all likelihood be wearing a horrendous Miami Marlins jersey come spring training. I've grown up with him being a member of this team, and now that he's gone for all intents and purposes I don't know how watching this team is going to be enjoyable at all for the next few seasons, especially if Wright continues his regression. If ever there was evidence that the Wilpons are bad owners, it is the fact that they let their star player walk due to their own personal financial problems, and that they are too proud/stubborn/stupid to realize that they are only hurting themselves and more importantly, the team.
Davis/Duda Discussion
Why do we prefer Ike Davis at first and Duda in the outfield?
I understand that Davis is a better first baseman, but he'd likely be a MUCH better outfielder. Knowing Davis played relief pitcher in college he likely has a much better arm, it's clear he has more mobility and I believe he played a great deal of outfield in college. Would just rather put the worse defender at first and maximize our outfield defense.
