Sports Network | September 20, 2008
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Bengie Molina homered and drove in four runs as Barry Zito shut down the Dodgers in a 7-1 rout in the opener of a three-game set.
Zito (10-16) yielded just a run on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings to pick up the win, his fourth in five decisions. Pablo Sandoval contributed two doubles, two runs scored and knocked in a pair for San Fran, which snapped a four-game skid.
Greg Maddux (7-13), coming off seven shutout innings at Coors Field, was touched for seven runs on nine hits in five innings for LA, which was coming off a 7-3 road trip. Pablo Ozuna accounted for the Dodgers' only run with a homer, as the club remained 3 1/2 games ahead in the NL West after Arizona dropped a 3-2 decision to Colorado Friday, moving their magic number to six.
The Giants got on the board in the first thanks to Molina's two-run single, which saw Sandoval avoid Danny Ardoin's tag at the plate for the second run.
Eugenio Velez orchestrated a run in the home second by singling to start the frame, stealing second and scoring on Dave Roberts' two-out single to right.
San Fran's four-run fifth put the game out of reach. With two outs and two runners on, Sandoval hit a fly ball that spun Manny Ramirez around at the left field warning track. Two runs scored on the catchable ball and Molina followed with his 15th homer of the year to center.
Zito's only mistake occurred in the eighth to Ozuna, who connected on his first homer since 2006.
Zito has now recorded double-digit wins for eight consecutive years. The lefty is 100-6 in his career when getting at least four runs of run support...The Dodgers snapped a seven-game home winning streak...Maddux is 1-4 in six starts with LA. The veteran is a lifetime 30-15 against the Giants...Molina extended his career-high RBI total to 92...Ramirez and Matt Kemp each had two hits for LA.
