Mariners' Bedard undergoes surgery

Sports Network | September 26, 2008

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Seattle Mariners pitcher Erik Bedard underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Friday.

Dr. Lewis Yocum performed the procedure and removed a cyst from the shoulder and performed a minor labral debridement. The operation revealed no tears in either the labrum or the rotator cuff.

"The surgery report is very good news," Mariners vice president and general manager Lee Pelekoudas said. "There are no structural issues with the shoulder, which should allow for a positive timetable on Erik's full recovery."

Bedard is expected to be sidelined approximately six months.

The lefty suffered through hip and back problems this year before experiencing tightness in the shoulder that eventually ended his season. He hit the disabled list July 5 with the shoulder injury, then had several comeback attempts derailed in August. When healthy, Bedard compiled a 6-4 record with a 3.67 earned run average, with 72 strikeouts in 81 innings of work.

Bedard was acquired from the Orioles prior to the 2008 campaign in a much- ballyhooed move. Bedard went 13-5 with a 3.16 ERA and 221 strikeouts in 28 starts with Baltimore in '07.

The 29-year-old has a career mark of 46-38 with a 3.81 ERA in 129 games (126 starts) over six seasons with Baltimore and Seattle.
