Marlins ink Helms to two-year deal

Sports Network | October 03, 2008

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins re-signed infielder Wes Helms to a two-year contract through the 2010 season, the team announced Friday.

"After doing a great job for us in 2006, we welcomed Wes back to the Marlins this year, and he again strenghtened our bench and was a positive influence in the clubhouse," said Marlins' president of baseball operations, Larry Beinfest. "We look forward to Wes being part of highly productive Marlins clubs in 2009 and 2010."

Helms, 32, was re-acquired by the Marlins from Philadelphia on April 5. In 132 games for Florida, he hit .243 with five home runs and 31 runs batted in. He hit a game-winning home run in the eighth inning of the team's final regular season game against the Mets, knocking New York out of the playoffs.

In his 10-year major-league career, he has spent time with Atlanta, Milwaukee, Florida and Philadelphia, compiling a .262 batting average with 68 homers and 296 RBI in 903 games.
