Sports Network | October 15, 2008

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals claimed reliever Charlie Manning off waivers from the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old lefty made his major league debut this past season for the last-place Nats, posting a 1-3 record with a 5.14 earned run average in 57 games.

Manning was originally drafted by the New York Yankees in the ninth round of the 2001 draft.

In a corresponding move, the Cardinals designated first baseman Josh Phelps for assignment.

St. Louis finished 86-76 in 2008, 11 1/2 games behind the NL Central champion Cubs.
