Red Sox 3B Lowell has surgery

Sports Network | October 20, 2008

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Boston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell underwent surgery on his right hip on Monday to repair a torn labrum and fix a bone spur.

Lowell had the surgery at this time to be fully recovered for Spring Training.

The 2007 World Series Most Valuable Player, Lowell went hitless in eight at-bats against the Los Angeles Angels in Boston's American League Division Series matchup and was taken off the active roster prior to Game 4. He was left off Boston's roster for the American League Championship Series, which the Red Sox lost to Tampa Bay in seven games.

In 113 games during the 2008 regular season, Lowell hit .274 with 17 homers and 73 runs batted in, the lowest marks he has posted in each category since coming over from the Marlins in the trade that also brought Josh Beckett to Boston.
