Pirates bring Mientkiewicz back from bereavement list

Sports Network | August 22, 2008

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates reinstated first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz from the bereavement list on Friday.

Mientkiewicz left the team on Monday to be with his wife, Jodi, who underwent heart surgery for a pacemaker. He is hitting .285 with two home runs and 26 RBI in 98 games for the Pirates this season.

To make room on the roster, the club optioned outfielder Steven Pearce to Triple-A Indianapolis. The organization's 2007 Minor League Player of the Year, Pearce batted .218 (12-for-55) with seven RBI in 16 games after being recalled from Indianapolis on July 26.
