Recap: Colorado vs. Cincinnati

Sports Network | August 23, 2008

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Matt Holliday had a three-run double in the seventh to boost the Rockies to a win over the Cincinnati Reds, 7-6, in the second game of a weekend set at Coors Field.

Garrett Atkins, Clint Barmes and Willy Taveras had two hits and a run scored each and Ian Stewart had a hit, walk and an RBI to give the Rockies their sixth win in eight games.

Aaron Cook allowed four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and two walks in five-plus innings, while striking out one. Luis Vizcaino (1-0) threw two innings and gave up a run in relief to earn the win. Brian Fuentes pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save of the season.

Edinson Volquez threw six innings, allowing three runs and six hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Mike Lincoln (1-4) gave up three runs on three hits while recording only one out to receive the loss.

Chris Dickerson homered and doubled, Jay Bruce had two hits -- including a homer -- and three RBI, while Joey Votto added three hits as the Reds lost for the fifth time in eight games.

The Rockies regained the lead in the seventh against the Cincinnati bullpen. Yorvit Torrealba led off with a single, and Barmes and Taveras hit back-to- back singles to load the bases with one out.

Lincoln, who started the seventh for the Reds, was lifted in favor of Nick Masset, who didn't fare much better. Holliday greeted the new pitcher with a bases-clearing double, giving Colorado a 6-5 lead. Brad Hawpe followed with an RBI single for a two-run advantage.

Bruce added a solo shot with two outs in the eighth off Taylor Buchholz to bring the Reds within one. Pinch-hitter Ryan Hanigan worked a one-out walk off Fuentes in the ninth, but Dickerson struck out and Jeff Keppinger grounded into a fielder's choice to end the game.

The Reds got on the board in the opening frame. Dickerson hit a double, Keppinger walked, and two batters later Votto blooped an RBI single to left field.

The Rockies took the lead in the second thanks to a defensive miscue. With two outs and runners on first and second, Cook bunted and was safe when Paul Bako threw the ball into left field, allowing both runners to score.

Colorado extended its lead to two in the third. Atkins hit a one-out double and Stewart followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1.

The Reds tied the score in the fourth. Brandon Phillips reached on an errant throw from Barmes and advanced to third on Votto's single. Two batters later Bruce drove home both runners with a single to right, making it 3-3.

Phillips and Votto started the Reds' sixth with singles to put runners at the corners for Edwin Encarnacion, who hit an RBI single to put Cincinnati up 4-3, ending Cook's outing.

Vizcaino came on in relief, and struck out Bruce, Corey Patterson and Bako to get out of the inning without any further damage.

The Reds got to the Vizcaino in the seventh. With one out, Dickerson blasted his second homer of the year into the second deck in right field for a 5-3 lead.
