THE BIG DAY

The big big day has finally arrived and the Mets must feel like the belle of the ball. Teams can formally start making offers to free agents from other teams and everyone will be interested in the team from Queens for one reason or another. More specifically:

Reason #1: Genuine interest in the Mets
Reason #2: Genuine interest in getting the biggest contract possible

Reason #2 involves the Mets because the Mets have one of the biggest money vaults this side of the McDuck mansion, and everyone knows that Omar Minaya isn't afraid to dip into it. The Mets' needs are clear:

[x] Closer
[x] Big bat
[x] Catcher
[x] Second baseman

There are rumblings all across this great land of this guy or that potentially donning a Mets uni in 2006, so stay tuned to AA for the latest news and rumors.

To get things started, here are a few rumors off Rotoworld.com:
  • discussions of Cameron to the Padres for Otsuka? (seems like more players would have to be coming back to the Mets in this one)
  • interest in signing Farnsworth
  • interest in Julio Lugo? (maybe as utility man and 2B?)
  • several rumors of trades going with Tampa Bay, possibly also with a third team like the Rangers involved.  Probably for Huff and/or Baez, possibly sending them to Boston for Manny later.  Favorite line:
To the Rays for whom? The Mets have interest in Julio Lugo, Danys Baez, Aubrey Huff and Toby Hall. Also, the Rays have this kid Kazmir that might be only a year or two away from the majors. Maybe he's available.

Travis Lee
Part of the reason is that he'll always be seen as a bust.  The other part of the reason is that he's just not that good.  While you site his numbers against lefties, they really aren't very good.  A .692 OPS is dreadful out of the 1B slot, and it really is not worth the 2-3 million he'll probably earn next season.  And his glove, while quite good, isn't enough to really make up the difference.  He's really just a left handed version of Minky, but probably not quite as good.

Honestly, I'd rather have Julio Franco than either Millar or Lee, even if he did once strike out against Mordecai Brown.  The best option might be to just look over a bunch of AAA rosters to find someone another team just won't use.

As far as Walker is concerned, I'd imagine he'll stay put in Chicago, especially since he's much better than Hairston.

Funny
Nice "Three Finger" Brown reference.

My opening day lineup
  1. Jose Reyes
  2. Carlos Beltran
  3. David Wright
  4. Cliff Floyd
  5. Mike Jacobs
  6. Bengie Molina
  7. Todd Walker
  8. Mike Cameron
  9. Pedro Martinez
Putting Wright in the 3 spot would be ideal, pushing Beltran to 2nd.  This way Beltran is at his comfortable spot and hopefully we see more of the Beltran from Kansas City and Houston.  In the 3rd spot last season, he hit everything up in the air.  This way he can go back to more of his game.  Though moving David takes away his protection of Floyd, he'll drive in a lot more now and I think Mike Jacobs is ready to be 5th.  He would make good protection for 5th, as he put together monster numbers last year.  He was also the organizational mets player of the year twice.  And aquiring Bengie Molina and Todd Walker would be ideal fits for the club in my mind.
Yankees flat out utterly suck.

Not a championship team
a playoff team, perhaps, depending on the competition and who's in the pen.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loop on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a viewing.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
