Around SBN: Steve McNair Dead - Former NFL QB Shot and Killed

Drew, Weaver off the Board

Just prior to the midnight deadline last night, Stephen Drew and Jered Weaver signed deals with their respective drafters, officially removing themselves from next Tuesday's draft. Drew would have been a very intriguing pick for the Mets at #9 overall, but that's apparently no longer an option.

In other news, the Mets picked up a half-game on both the Braves and Marlins yesterday with both of those teams losing. The Mets now stand at 2.5 games out of first. Of course, they're still not playing particularly well, they've just been fortunate that no other team in the NL East has been able to run away with the division just yet. With all five teams lacking in one area or another, any team could get hot and jump out to a big lead. Why not the Mets?

Not sure if anyone caught this, but apparently after Sunday's game, Mike Dejean made an appeal to get the official scoring of a hit by Juan Pierre changed into an error on David Wright. Mike DeJean is like school in the summer: no class.

Over at Minor League Ball, John Sickels will be holding a mock draft this Sunday at 2pm, with readers of the site representing the different MLB teams. It should be a lot of fun. Some good discussion on the Mets' possible draftees is going on in this thread and this diary.

Also, Vinny is back up and running at No Joy in Metsville. Go check in and welcome him back.

dejean
should become familiar with the term designated for assignment what an a** clown about about the other hits he gave up in that inning as complaining the last one was an error, he should figure out why his pitching so terribly and fix it instead of worring about is miserable ERA...errr

linkage
Very many thanks for the nice link roundup today, after a slow baseball-news weekend.  (Peripherally, after missing the LaTroy Hawkins deal for a couple of days over the weekend: Is the Sportsblog "family" considering adding an MLB transaction-watching blog?  I'd love to see a place to discuss trades and roster moves that was as good for MLB as Sickels is for minor-league stuff.)

Transactions
I don't think one is in the works, but a great existing site for that sort of thing is RotoWorld.com. I check it daily to monitor the status of players on my fantasy league teams, but it's also a great way to keep on top of baseball transactions, injury updates, etc. throughout MLB.

I was inspired by Eric's comment that Olerud had the best 3-year run as a Met outside Carlos Beltran to look at a few different Mets, and when I noticed that two of my all-time favorite players (Alfonzo and Strawberry) were kinda screwed by having (relatively)bad seasons in between some really good seasons, I decided to see which Mets had the best 3 seasons, period (non-consecutively). Beltran still comes out on top, but my all-time favorite player Alfonzo comes in 2nd place, and him and Straw are the only two to have three 6.0+ WAR seasons. Also interesting that Hundley comes out ahead of Gary Carter, Cleon Jones almost finishes ahead of Mike Piazza, and Joe McEwing doesn't make the list.
