please stop trolling.
For goodness' sake.  Couldn't you at least pick a more creative subject to try to get people riled up about?  How about "OMG we're going to lose the NLDS in 3 games because we don't have Pedro!!!1!"

Back to more pleasant topics: I'm really enjoying the emotional send-off for Frank Robinson.  What a great guy.  I hope he finds another role to play in baseball that can satisfy his still tremendous energy to improve the game.

Agreed
The Robinson speech/ceremony was very classy, very appropriate. I was especially moved when all of the Mets approached him afterward to embrace/shake hands/etc. Nice job by the Nats management.

I'm amazed that the man was able to keep his composure. ... Perhaps it's the wisdom that comes with age?

holy crap!
Anderson Hernandez learned to hit!

okay, scratch that
It now appears clear that, in fact, what happened was that Ramon Ortiz forgot how to pitch.

by anonymous on Oct 1, 2006 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes.
That's the more likely explanation. Though to be fair, it's probable that Ortiz simply remembered that he didn't know how to pitch in the first place.

Howdy Gents
I was just about to say how good AHern looks in the field until he pulled that fake-out of Cliff and Carlos out there in left-center.

Anyways - I wonder what kind of insurance Wilpon is carrying on Pedro.  If's he's got the Mo Vaughn clause - and I can't imagine he doesn't - then that will free up a few more bucks for other starters.

Also - everyone's bitching about the Mets getting a day game (and I agree) - but imagine being an A's fan.  They've got three 10 am games coming up this week - that's gotta suck.

I love the day games, myself.
but I guess if you work a regular 9-5 job that's reason enough to hate them.

Anderson Hernandez wasn't completely at fault on that pop-up -- I'm sure Floyd and Beltran were a bit gun-shy after almost colliding on the last fly out.

by anonymous on Oct 1, 2006 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You're totally right about the pop-up
but AHern did go a little Barry Sanders on their asses, you have to admit.

oh, he definitely half-assed it.
But honestly, that's the right way to go today on any play involving possible contact.

by anonymous on Oct 1, 2006 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't really mean "half-assed"
more like he deked them a couple of times with what would have been fine-looking moves on a football field.  Anyway - it's not important.

My problem right now is trying to make plans or not during the month of October at various times.  Every time an afternoon meeting or evening plan comes up, I have to consider, is that likely to conflict with a possible Mets game?  I feel like I want to tell everyone of friends and colleagues, "Look, just call me after the election."

yeah, agreed.
It's silly that the schedule can't be sorted out a bit earlier.  It's only recently that mlb.com even made the general schedule available, showing the time slots with all the names and many of the times still blank.  I wish they could at least commit to the schedule in advance.

Mangini
is gonna get crap for not going for the field goal. I've never seen such a gamble. Oh well.

yeah but
When your'e playing a team with that kind of offense and you don't have the weapons to match them, you have to take gambles like that. I thought it was a good move, it turned out to backfire.
its a ground ball...trickling... its a fair ball, its by Buckner, rounding third Knight, the Mets will win the ballgame, the Mets win

by DoctorK16 on Oct 1, 2006 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

it was an unorthodoxed move
nd you can also say against an offense like Indianapolis you have to put points on the board. If it had worked he would be a hero. I disagreed with at the time, but do give him credit for taking the gamble like he did on the onsides kick. Funny, but the TD return with two minutes left was a bad thing. thought that Pennington had a great chance of taking them down the field and get at least a tying field goal. Colts had no timeouts and couldn't have come back. Would have been nice if the return took them back to the Colt 20 and they could have run time off the clock. Great game. Looks like a good Jet season and I love Mangini compared to the ultra conservative Edwards.

put it in the books!
It's been a magical season, and what's great about today is that we get all the sweetness of the end-of-year celebration, and it's not over yet.  Here's to a long, exciting postseason.  See you on Wednesday (for that comment contest).

I'm having deja vu here watching Kenny-boy
walk in a run in extras for the Tigers.  I'm so glad  that bonehead isn't pitching for us.

Judging by the comments to Matt Callan’s ode to 1986 Mets: A Year To Remember from a few weeks back, the video has a devoted Mets fan following. Despite being too young to remember anything about that season, it has a special place in my fandom as well. It was part of a two video rotation (Ghostbusters being the other) which ran almost daily on my television for a few years in the early 90s. And it remained a once-in-awhile watch through high school and college.

Unsurprisingly, the physical tape deteriorated over time, and the screen jumps and sound skips made for a less than optimal viewing experience. With sale of the video discontinued, my brother converted it to DVD and gave it to me for Christmas in 2010. See the picture above for the box and DVD. He even created a scene selection function which can be accessed from the main menu. "Get Metsmerized!" plays on loops on the menu screen. It is my favorite Christmas gift ever and is still nice to throw on for a watch.

"How'd we do it? Mirrors!"
I was flipping through some of my parents' photo albums this afternoon in search of one particular shot of the sign my older sister made for Mets Banner Day back in the late eighties. Though I didn't find that one — I'll post it when I eventually track it down, and I can assure you that it's Keith-themed — but I did stumble upon this wonderful photo of my younger sister's stuffed animal menagerie spread out in front of a glorious rainbow-festooned Mets pennant, also from the late eighties.

She works for the HRC now and was particularly delighted to be reminded of this photo.

Now that banner day is back, hopefully this years will look a little like this. I know it's not great, but i don't pretend to be a professional. embiggen!
