Notes:

The Mets lost one game last night, but it feels more like three. I don't know if it's because the game itself was such a heartbreaker or because Operation: Crapshoot begins tonight in St. Louis as the Mets sent Steve Trachsel to the mound and it continues tomorrow when Oliver Perez makes his postseason debut. In Suppan and Reyes the Cardinals aren't exactly rolling out Koufax and Drysdale, and that's what makes these next two games a complete mystery.

Much of the Mets' bullpen was suspect last night and they're probably going to be counted on for at least six innings over the next two nights. The good news is that we're just about out of time to stew over the loss in Game 2 because it's time to go out there and play Game 3.

a few thoughts

I'm guessing it's a little of both.

Plus, I think we Mets fans were a little spoiled by the three-game sweep of LA. It's not our god-given right to win, we have to remember that. The Mets are going to have to scrap it out to some extent, as they have whenever they have had success.

I must say, though, that last night's loss was especially bitter, given that victory seemed close at hand on more than one occasion. Coughing up two two-run leads never feels good. Wagner's meltdown was just the arsenic on the cake.

you're right

that the short turnaround after a loss like that is a benefit to the Mets. It can be crushing to have too much time to meditate on a bullpen collapse like that -- so maybe the lack of a travel day means the team can turn around and forget it that much quicker.

Pitcher Inconsistency Index

I posted a "Pitcher Inconsistency Index" (PII) under Diaries. Please visit it and give me your comments.

The PII captures both the average quality of a pitcher AND the pitcher's individual game variance. Intuitively, a rational manager would like to start a pitcher who gives up few walks and few home runs and such a rational manager would also like to be reasonably certain that the number of walks and home runs that the pitcher gives up will lie close to his (low) average.

There are two varieties of the index: one is based on walks (PII-BB) and the other is based on home runs (PII-HR). A pitcher with a low index value has a low probability of giving up a walk/home run and is consistent about not giving up many walks/home runs. Conversely, a pitcher with a high index value should not be trusted.

The PII-BB stats do not bode well for the Mets in their series with the Cardinals:

T. Glavine 4.9 vs. J. Weaver 4.7

J. Maine 7.1 vs. C. Carpenter 4.0

S. Trachsel 6.0 vs. J. Suppon 5.4

O. Perez 7.0 vs. A. Reyes 6.0

The PII-HR stats suggest a more even match up between the Mets and the Cardinals:

T. Glavine 3.0 vs. J. Weaver 4.4

J. Maine 4.0 vs. C. Carpenter 2.9

S. Trachsel 3.3 vs. J. Suppon 3.0

O. Perez 4.2 vs. A. Reyes 4.5

Suppan seems about as good as I've ever seen him in the early going. A little more patience from the Met batters may pay dividends, though -- since he has shown he can throw strikes, they'll have to protect the plate and foul off a few pitches, and wait for him to make a mistake. He ought to make some mistakes -- this is Jeff Suppan we're talking about.

really showing no ability to adjust to the ump here. It was clear from the first two batters that he was getting nothing on the inside corner. Only in Molina's at-bat did he finally start using the outside part of the plate instead of forlornly throwing inside again for ball twelve. His shelf life in this game is going to be very short.

Suppan: throwing strikes.
Trachsel: throwing balls and pouting.

And when are we going to start talking about the terrible breaks that Shawn Green gets on hard-hit balls? He should've saved at least one run by leaving out the stupid dive, but even disregarding that he should have gotten to that ball better.

Willie missed a huge opportunity there -- because a pitcher entering following an injury can take as long as he needs to warm up, Oliver could've come in instantly after Trax took the ball off his leg. Huge advantage lost there.

After the walk to Pujols, Willie played the "it tightened up on him" card and got Oliver, who still hadn't begun warming. Still giving Trachsel way too much rope, considering he barely recorded a single out in the entire frigging game, but at least Oliver's in now to stem the tide and give the team the barest of chances to recover.

I don't want Zito near my ballclub this year or next year. The guy isn't an ace, he walked about a 100 guys this year and gives up a fair amount of hits. He wasn't good in Game 1 either. Plus he would have cost more than Milledge, it would have been Milledge and Heilman. And I don't want him gettting $75 million from us this offseason.

I was at that game

it had a totally different feel. We were only down by 3, we were at home, and Sid was mowing those bastids down, which pumped everyone up. Plus, we were coming off that huge comback win, as opposed to that huge bullpen collapse we had last night. Other than all that, I agree with what you're saying.

He was terrible as usual, but in his defense he should have been out of that first inning if he had anything resembling a legitimate glove in rightfield. Shawn Green is so utterly useless in every way I would basically rather see Chris Woodward out there. Green is so poor defensively it borders on the absurd.

I'm as big a Trachsel hater as there is, and I'm not making excuses for him. He gave up three hits and three walks by himself in that first inning. My comment was more a knock on Green, who finds new ways to disappoint me every time he goes out there. Trachsel almost certainly won't be back next season and the Mets should make every effort to relegate Green to bench duties and the occasional spot start. Him starting in the outfield in 2007 gives me fits.

When Carpenter was ready to face Trachsel, I think we all just accepted that we'd have our white flags out for that game. Their best, our worst, go give it a shot. When LaRussa changed Carpenter's start, Willie should have done the same with Trachsel. Admittedly, he had no idea that Maine would have such an atrocious outing, but I think that would have been the thing to do.

is Glavine to win game 5, Maine to have a better outing in game 6, and Oliver to have a repeat performance in game 7 (of course that would be a whole different situation, starting a game 7 compared to coming in in the situation he had tonight, already down by 3, bases loaded, nobody out). If somehow Perez comes through with a big game tomorrow, then that would take a little of the pressure off of Maine in game 6.
