Notes:

Second verse, same as first. The weather report calls for some clouds overhead in St. Louis, and the batting report calls for the Carloses to add some thunder into the mix *chortle*. Tonight's pitching matchup certainly favors the Mets, as the odds of Jeff Weaver pitching credibly for three consecutive games have to be considered long at best. Tom Glavine got another day to rest his old bones and looks to hurl another gem to send the Mets back to Queens with two chances to clinch.

go, go, go
This is obviously a pivotal game for the Mets, as it's the last time until the World Series that we'll be playing behind a solid starting pitcher.  If Glavine doesn't get it done tonight, it will be a long two days (or possibly one) in New York trying to slug it out and hoping the bullpen holds together.  If Glavine does get it done, it will be a good two games (or possibly one) looking to close things out.  Somebody has to be behind going into Game 6, and you have to hope it's not us.  A lot will depend on the Mets' hitters throwing up some runs early in the game, or at a minimum running Weaver's pitch count up to the point where he can't pitch more than 4 or 5.  We've seen what the Mets can do against the Cardinal bullpen.
the odds of Jeff Weaver pitching credibly for three consecutive games have to be considered long at best

Gambler's fallacy, anyone?  Unfortunately -- and I say this in the full conviction that Jeff Weaver stinks, and will regress to the mean -- he still might be decent tonight.

Weaver
Surely the odds of him pitching poorly tonight are not bettered by the fact that he has pitched well in his last two outings. Though I did just return from a trip in my time machine to just prior to his first good start, so that's where I was coming from.

RUNS!
I don't want to be clinging to a 2-run lead in the ninth. Lets get to Jeff early and then knock the bullpen around to set us up for game 6.

Who would take a two run lead in the ninth tonight, over the unknown of having to play the first eight innings?  I'm thinking I'd take the deal.

Tough inning -- everything started off great, and Weaver was even making the pouty face.  I really thought the pouty face meant we were all right.  But getting out of that has to be a confidence-booster.

To borrow a phrase from TMQ
That could have been a "hidden play" by Endy.  Clearing the pitcher there is potentially big.  Top of the order looked pretty good against Weaver.  If we bust a big third inning here Endy gets some of the credit.

Glavine
4+ measly IP for Glavine -- not what the team needed.  Some of that is on the inconsistent strike zone, but not much.  Glavine didn't have anything good tonight -- the fastball was weak and straight, and he couldn't spot the changeup at all, it was sailing all over the place.  Bad night for Tom at a very bad time.  If the bullpen can hold it close, we've still got a chance, but this is not a great situation.

Quick complaint about Fox
WHY oh why to they have to show the crowd so much?

We don't get to see what the catcher puts down, where he sets up, etc., because they are busy showing 23678527863 different crowd shots before each pitch. Then they barely get back before the pitcher throws.

Why must Fox suck it so bad?

long ago,
they figured out that real fans would watch the playoffs no matter how badly they fucked them up with all kinds of off-the-field "flavor" -- so they started producing for the casual channel-surfer, trying to manipulate emotions and get personalities into it.  And once they went down that road it was the end of any fan being able to see the game.  Forever.

If he offered at the ball which he did then it's a strike even if it just hit his hand. the guy has been in the game 50 years and he didn't know that.

what choice do we have?  It's too bad Glavine couldn't come through but I guess that goes to show you how huge Oliver Perez' game was.

Cardinal die hard fan here, just wanted to say...

Awesome series so far guys.    Such drama back and forth.  You must feel good going back to NY.  We are content with a 3-2 series lead and Carp on the mound, especially after a lackluster start from him earlier in the series (he hardly ever has back to back bad starts)

If I may ask...and please donm't take offense...

Why on God's green earth does Reyes, on EVERY pitch he takes for a strike, have to act like there was NO way in hell that the pitch was a strike?  Trust me I am sure our hitters do things that bother you guys to no end so I am not preaching.  But for the love of God, Reyes takes a pitch right down the middle for a strike and his body language/facial expressions are like there was NO WAY that pitch was even close.

It's tiresome to say the least.  But as I said I am positive out guys do things that bother you guys as well.

Goodluck in game 6 fella's.

I am sorry you're so bitter PJ, unfortunately you have totally misread my intentions.

All because of a loss.  If I posed the same question after Mondays game you all would be answering left and right.

I asked a question about a Mets hitter, a Mets hitter I think is the BEST SS in the NL.  I simply asked why it "seems" he does certains things.  Because I don't see him much.  All you guys had to do is tell me how you think it is, because quite frankly I am going to go with the opinions of true NY fans over MY interpretation.

Sorry if some of you don't get that.

Some of them probably look right down the middle
to you, but I'll bet you have your red-tinted classes on (to go with your red shirt and taped-on red-construction-paper soul patch).

Actually, I think I know what you're talking about, but when I see Reyes make that face it looks to me like he is saying to himself that he can't believe he didn't swing at it.  Maybe I have my Mets goggles on, though.  Reyes laughs a lot and seems to be having a good time no matter what's going on.  He's not much of a drama queen at all, actually.

Anyway, here's hoping Carpenter throws another gem at Shea tomorrow.  The Mets bullpen hardly ever has more than one bad outing in a stretch, so I'll take my chances with Johnny Maine again.

WOW
You guys are babies.

Go do that NY thang....as in "go beat your wives"

I mean c'mon isn't that like the double wide bash?

I am surem he wished you luck like any normal human would offer luck.

As in...

Goodluck, play hard, play clean, may the umpire not effect the game, may nobody get hurt, and may the best team, sometimes luckiest team win.

My goodness I am about 95% sure you guys are going to the WS, but you act like a bunch of little kids.

Another concern troll
or maybe the same one.  Who the hell knows.  They're like cockroaches who grow a pair once they get a win under their belts.  Losers.

Pujols MVP came with an honest question
Why are you here? With you're wonderful nickname implying moral superiority. I am sure people in Cardnals world were loving the Game 1 and 4 plays. Whining is part of that deal when you root.

actually
I'm guessing that if you went over to Viva El Birdos you might see that these guys are regulars there.  I've looked at that site a couple of times in the last week just to see what Cards fans are thinking.  It's interesting.

Come on, it's not like AA is some big secret club--probably all the SportsBlogs sites have links to the other teams right on the sidebar.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Dunno why
He is here.  But...

It's your, not you're.  CardInals not Cardnals.

You guys DOMINATED game 4.  Game 1 was determined off 1 bad pitch, a bad pitch that STL made and Moletran murdered.  I, have NO problem taking a look outside the box.  You guys have the better team by far.  You prooved that game 4 bigtime.  But we can hang somewhat.  I still say it's your series.

You simply have a better team in my opinion.

it ain't over yet.
If we can all grow up long enough to think about baseball for a few minutes: the season's not over, and I'm glad for that (since I'll be at Shea tomorrow), but it's hanging by a mighty thin thread at this point.

My major concern at this point is that, for a majority of the innings in this series, the Mets hitters have looked uncharacteristically keyed-up, overanxious, and impatient.  They're getting far away from the patience and power that characterized their great success this year.  Reyes is the easiest poster boy to pick for the new, flailing approach, but everyone has shown it -- LoDuca's been much less patient since August or September, even Wright is pressing and not looking like the dominant 2-strike hitter he was during the regular season.  Only Delgado -- not coincidentally, the most mature and experienced pure hitter on the team -- has seemed immune to pressing at the plate.  I wonder if the relative weakness of the lineup with Floyd injured has played a part in this.  Honestly, at this point I have a hard time figuring out how Jeff Weaver, Jeff Suppan, and a bullpen full of raw rookies have put this good a team on the brink of elimination.  I don't think you can give all that credit to the St. Louis pitchers, though they've sure impressed me with their preparation and scouting; I think the Mets have changed their approach at the plate, and it's costing them dearly.  Hard to say the Met pitching has disappointed very much, either; aside from the one bullpen explosion, all these games have been well within reach for a long time while the Mets struggled even to get runners on base.  It's going to be over soon one way or the other, and I'll be screaming and hoping with the 55,000 other faithful tomorrow, but I have to say I don't like the Mets' chances too much at this point.

ESPN just showed a stat
saying that all-time in 7 game series the team who won game 5 has won something like 35 out of 51, so that's about 2/3, but I'd be curious to know how many of those teams clinched on the road.  Off the top of my head I'd guess that percentage drops down to more like half.

Like Eric said above, we have some factors in our favor, and so do they.  Just gotta play it out.

ah, some baseball analysis here
That's a welcome change.

Good take on the hitting, anonymous.  I'll add that the Mets of late seem to lose hope or lose steam when they fall behind.  As we all remember, this team has not given up all season--why are they starting now?  A come-from-behind win tonight might have re-affirmed something for them.  Alas, it was not to be.

Let's hope Willie gets them up to play tomorrow.  I'll be there, too.  Let's go Mets.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

can't hold a lead
and can't come from behind. that is a recipe for a sweep. however, the mets are resiliant and they'll get back on track tomorrow. carp is vulnerable early , but seems to settle in. I'm hoping for a big first inning and a John Maine gem.
