Down to the Wire

The Mets broke out their pinstripes and blue caps last night and forced a seventh game in this LCS. After losing Game 5 in St. Louis on Tuesday night the Mets came home to play a game they had to win and faced a pitching matchup that heavily favored the Cardinals. What followed was described by Paul Lo Duca as "the maturation of John Maine", and it's hard to argue with his assessment. Maine allowed just two hits (plus four walks and a HBP) in 5.1 innings of work, and for the first time that I can recall was actually able to get some of his secondary pitches -- his slider and occasionally his changeup -- over for strikes. This start not only helped the Mets push this series to the brink, but it also provided a window into the potential of Maine as a starter for this ballclub down the road.

Once Maine exited the bullpen took over and was stellar through the eighth inning, with Chad Bradford and Aaron Heilman sandwiching scoreless frames around Guillermo Mota's double play groundout of Scott Rolen. The Mets' setup men were able to keep their pitch counts to a minimum (Bradford 14, Mota 4, Heilman 12) and all three will undoubtedly be available for duty tonight. The only blemish on the pitching record was another disconcerting effort by Billy Wagner, who allowed two runs on three hits while pitching on five days rest. Wagner was beat again by So Taguchi, who (again) survived an egregious non-third-strike call by the home plate umpire to dump a two-run double down the left field line. Wagner's slider was pretty sloppy, which isn't particularly uncommon for a pitcher who hasn't thrown in a number of days. Still, Wagner hasn't been able to put away these Cardinal hitters, and he hasn't struck out a single batter in 2.2 innings this series.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Mets got contributions galore from Jose Reyes, who hit a homerun to lead off the game, picked up two singles and swiped two bases. Shawn Green has managed to offset his laughable play in right field by leading the team in hitting this series, picking up two more base knocks last night including an RBI single in the fourth. Perhaps most importantly, the Mets managed to pick up a win against a tough pitcher with little firepower from the Carloses, as Beltran and Delgado combined to go just 1-for-8 (though the one was a single by Beltran who would eventually come around to score. David Wright picked up a single and now has hits in each of the last three games (woot!) and Endy Chavez picked up a [bunt] single as well, thumbing his nose at my good friend Marc Normandin in the process.

So here we are. Six games have been played and we're no closer to determining a series winner than we were when this thing started last Thursday. By this time tomorrow the Mets and the Cardinals will have played seven games in eight days and one team will be headed for Detroit, tired and worn down, but nonetheless playing for the World Series.

Maine
Even if Maine performed badly in the playoffs this year I would give him a rotation spot next year.  He has shown enough potential to be given a chance in 2007.

One more thing I just have to mention:  Mike & The Mad Dog were right about one thing-- Billy Wagner sure has trouble in the big games.  Yes, the Mets won game 6 but he sure helped make it closer, didn't he?  And that is the second bad outing for Wagner in the NLCS.  Here's hoping he's not going to get the hatrick in game 7.

Wagner
I don't get that secure feeling I should have when Wagner enters the game.

But I don't want to talk abou that.  John Maine + Bullpen = teh winnnzors.

Now let's treat Suppan like the scrub he is tonight.

Game 5
You mean they lost Game 5 on Tuesday, right?

Correct it before the baseball gods strike us down.

Well that explains it
So who's going to slip the Cubs jockstrap into Pujols' locker tonight?
"He even tried to pimp it," Floyd said. "He's got no pimp." Said Wright: "I don't even know what that means."

Good stuff
That's pretty funny.

I still maintain to this day, that even if fielded cleanly, Mookie would have beaten Buckner/Stanley to the bag.  Stanley got a bad jump off the mound.  Knight wouldn't haven't scored but inning would've continued.

And always remember...
The real goat is Stanley, who let the tying run score on a frickin' wild pitch a few pitches earlier!!!!

Weird thing...
The Stanley thing was extraordinarily weird for my family.  We knew him personally.  My dad grew up in the same 2-family house as his family and even played on the same HS team (my dad was two years older).  So we all wanted the Mets to win, but also for Bobby to to do well.

So anyways, we all know happened.  20 years later my Dad will yell and scream to anyone who'll listening that that pitch was REALLY A PASS BALL AND WE SHOULD BLAME GEDMAN!!!!1!

But it was really a case of
macular degeneration that caused Gedman to see spots at that moment, SO LET'S BLAME GEDMAN'S DNA !!!
Alright, Striker, you listen and listen close. Flying a plane is no different from riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes.

I'm listening to the FAN on the internet
and they just offered free tix to tonight for caller #14.  Damn, I'm jealous of whoever gets those.  I got tickets for game 7 of the 86 Series after game 6 when the whole city was tingling - I thought at that time I'd found one of those Wonka bars.

I'm going
I wasn't the 14th caller, but my Dad was selected to buy tickets and this is the game we bought. He actually can't go so it's me and Kim.

Have fun, man - it's a once-in-a-lifetime
experience.  My dad still (STILL!) gives me crap for dropping $250 (that I was so poor at the time I had to borrow from my boss at work) on that game 7 ticket 20 years ago - and I always tell him it was the best $250 I ever spent, so we have to agree to disagree on that. Shea's gonna be rockin' tonight.
He's on his final hole. He's about 455 yards away, he's gonna hit about a 2 iron I think.

Dude
If you get two tickets, I'll find us flights and we'll go. :-)

niceness
Once again, I'll be rooting from an Upper Deck box near section 21.  I have a record of one win and one loss from there.  I'm hoping for a little more of the Mets magic I saw in Game 1 of the NLDS.

I've done much better from the upper reaches of the Upper Deck (rows R, T, and V), where I am three for three this postseason.  It's actually really awesome to be that high up when Shea is packed and literally shaking.

We've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town!

Shea shaking
I was in upper row V last night and I've never felt it shake like that, not even the night in the 1999 DS when we beat that jackbag Rocker.

(Yes, I'm having too much fun with GraphJam)
I'm doing a little study on the NL East and thought I'd share an interesting little tidbit. To all of the self-loathing Mets fans/lazy 'MLB insiders' and journalistic parrots who have 1) Condemned the entire Mets organization as a joke 2) Written off this core's impressive run to date and 3) Deified the Phillies as unstoppable juggernauts w/ no chance to lose this division:

Yes, those wins are weighted towards '06-'07 and yes, the Phillies' are more recent but the fact remains that no other team in that span can even come close to the Mets total of days in first place, which should be garnering a lot more respect than it has. If only because we still have nearly the same core in place that has clearly had a lot of success and health-willing can very easily do so again in 2010.
